Hello!
Since I finished grad school, I feel like my brain has stopped working. Depressed, unmotivated, and sitting at my computer watching my 13th straight hour of Netflix streaming, a thought suddenly flashed before me: This is not good. Seeking inspiration, I started reading Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. In it, he discusses a concept called “sharpening the saw,” telling a story about an inexperienced lumberjack trying to cut down a tree, struggling for hours with it. A veteran lumberjack comes to him and says, “You need to sharpen your saw.” The inexperienced lumberjack says, “I don’t have time to sharpen the saw.” The lumberjack could have cut the tree down much faster if he’d taken the time off from sawing to sharpen the blade. That story illustrates how we all help ourselves IN THE LONG RUN by taking time off to improve ourselves. According to Covey, there are 4 dimensions where we can sharpen the saw: Physical, Mental, Spiritual, and Social/Emotional. This blog is my attempt to document my mental sharpening of the saw. It will also be a forum to discuss other forms of Personal Development. It’s overall objective is to help me to be in a state of always learning something. And the best way to learn something is to prepare to teach it, or in this case, blog it. I don’t expect anyone will read this, but that’s not the point really. I don’t think you learn much from reading blogs anyway. But if people do find this blog educational, entertaining, or even just a good way to waste some time, then all the better. The key is to be always learning something. Coming soon: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey.
